A preposição grega apó indica um movimento de afastamento ou retirada de algo que está na parte externa de um objeto. Assim é usada em Mt 5,29: "Caso o teu olho direito te leve a pecar, arranca-o e lança-o para longe de ti (apó sou)".
Em hebraico, o verbo gâlâh é usado com o significado de "despir", "descobrir", "revelar", "desvelar". Ex 20,26 diz: "Nem subirás o degrau do meu altar, para que não se descubra (thigâleh) a tua nudez". E 1Sm 2,27: "Um homem de Deus veio a Eli e lhe disse: 'Assim diz Iahweh. Eis que me revelei (nighlêthî) à casa de teu pai...'".
Dn 2,29 usa o verbo gâlâh para a revelação do que deve acontecer: "Enquanto estavas sobre o teu leito, ó rei, acorriam-te os pensamentos sobre o que deveria acontecer no futuro, e aquele que revela (weghâlê) os mistérios te deu a conhecer o que deve acontecer".
LXX traduz o verbo gâlâh pelo grego apokalýptô, que significa "descobrir", "revelar", "desvelar", "retirar o véu".
O NT usa o mesmo verbo neste sentido. Mt 10,26, por exemplo: "Não tenhais medo deles, portanto. Pois nada há de encoberto que não venha a ser descoberto (apokalyfthêsetai)". Deste verbo deriva o substantivo feminino grego apokálypsis, "revelação", "apocalipse". Em Gl 2,2 Paulo diz a propósito de sua ida a Jerusalém: "Subi em virtude de uma revelação (apokálypsin)...". E o livro do Apocalipse começa assim: "Revelação (apokálypsis) de Jesus Cristo...".
De "apocalipse" deriva "apocalíptica" e é exatamente com esse nome que designamos uma corrente de pensamento e uma literatura surgidas em Israel entre os anos 200 a.C. e 100 d.C., mais ou menos.
